Our Sod Installation Process Grimsby

At Monarch Landscaping, we’ve tailored our sod installation process to work with Grimsby’s unique soil and terrain. From the clay-rich yards in town to properties along the lakefront with sandy patches, we prepare every site so your new sod grows strong and healthy.

1. Lawn & Soil Preparation

We begin by clearing away old grass, weeds, and rocks. Because many Grimsby yards have compacted clay soil, we loosen and amend the ground to promote drainage and root growth.

2. Grading & Leveling

Next, we carefully grade the property to ensure water flows away from foundations and low spots. On sloped lots — common in Grimsby — this step prevents washouts and keeps your lawn level and stable.

3. Premium Sod Installation

We lay fresh, Ontario-grown sod in a staggered pattern so seams don’t line up. Around trees, gardens, and curves, the sod is cut to fit precisely, giving your lawn a seamless look.

4. Rolling & Initial Watering

Once the sod is in place, we use a roller to press it firmly into the soil and remove any air pockets. The sod is then deeply watered so roots immediately start bonding with the soil beneath.

5. Aftercare & Growth Support

Finally, we provide you with a step-by-step care plan. This includes when and how to water, mowing schedules, and when to fertilize — everything you need to ensure your sod thrives in Grimsby’s mix of hot summers and cold winters.

Get that New Lawn Wet

You will want to water the new sod as soon as it has been installed, for the next 14 days you will want to water your area for at least 45 minutes, we recommended picking up a sprinkler so you're not spending 1 hour of your day standing there. Alternatively, manually water your lawn 2-3 times a day spending 10-15 minutes at a time. PRO TIP, make sure you really water the edges your sod is beside such as a sidewalk/ driveway.

After 14 days, space out our lawn watering for 1 hour per watering every 2-3 days.

Let it grow then let it Mow

After the first 14 days of watering make sure your lawns have rooted to the ground, you can check by 2-3 soft tugs near the roots to ensure that your lawn has fully rooted to the lawn.

On your first and second lawn mowing cut make sure that your lawn mower is on the highest setting. On the next 2-3 cuts you can gradually lower the mower setting.

It Helps

At Monarch Landscaping we apply a thin layer of fertilizer with every installation,  after the install we recommend waiting 6-8 weeks.

Pro Tip: Fertilizer should be watered in or applied just before it rains to ensure you don't burn your lawn.
