When Lawn Repairs Are No Longer Enough

Reseeding can be useful when damage is limited to a few small areas. However, it may not be the most effective solution when weeds, soil problems or inconsistent growth affect most of the yard.

Complete lawn replacement gives you the opportunity to correct the surface, improve the growing layer and create uniform coverage at the same time.

It may be time to consider new sod if:

  • Less than half of the lawn contains healthy grass
  • Weeds return after repeated treatments
  • Shaded areas have become thin or bare
  • The yard feels rough or uneven underfoot
  • Different patches grow at different rates
  • Tree roots or compacted soil have affected the surface
  • Landscaping renovations have damaged large sections
  • You want to improve curb appeal before listing your home
  • Grass seed has produced inconsistent results

We will inspect the property before recommending full replacement. If a more limited repair makes sense, we will explain your options.

Our Sod Installation Process in Ancaster

  • Site Preparation – We remove old grass, weeds, rocks, and debris from your Ancaster property to create a clean base.
  • Soil Grading & Enrichment – We level the ground and add nutrient-rich soil to ensure ideal growing conditions.
  • Premium Sod Installation – High-quality sod is laid in a staggered pattern for seamless, even coverage.
  • Watering & Rolling – We roll the turf for strong soil contact and water it thoroughly to encourage healthy root growth.
  • Aftercare Instructions – We provide clear watering and mowing directions to help your new Ancaster lawn establish properly.

Lawn Restoration After Outdoor Renovations

Patios, pools, walkways, fences and garden renovations can leave the surrounding lawn compacted, torn or covered with construction materials. Once the main project is finished, fresh sod provides the final transition between the new feature and the rest of the property.

Monarch Landscaping can restore:

  • Lawn damaged during patio construction
  • Grass removed for a new walkway
  • Areas disturbed by fence installation
  • Sections affected by pool or equipment access
  • Bare ground around a home addition
  • Lawns damaged during drainage or utility work
  • Yard areas redesigned as part of a landscape renovation

Whenever possible, sod should be installed after the other contractors and heavy equipment have finished. This prevents the new lawn from being compressed or damaged immediately after installation.

Installing Sod Around Mature Trees and Gardens

Fresh sod cannot compensate for an unsuitable base. Our focus is not simply covering the property with green grass; it is creating the conditions that allow the new lawn to establish.

Start with an On-Site Lawn Assessment

We visit the property to examine the grass, soil, grading and surrounding landscape. We also measure the area, review access and discuss how the yard will be used.

A front lawn maintained primarily for curb appeal may have different priorities than a backyard used by children and pets. Understanding those expectations helps us recommend the right approach.

Remove What Is Preventing Healthy Growth

The existing lawn may be rototilled when the soil remains usable and the weed problem is limited. Properties with severe deterioration generally require a more complete removal. Our premium preparation can include removing approximately two inches of lawn and underlying material, disposing of it and rebuilding the growing surface with quality topsoil. Underground utility locates are requested through Ontario One Call before excavation begins.

Refine the Surface and Lawn Edges

Once the old lawn is removed, we grade the exposed area. This is our opportunity to smooth rough sections, define transitions and prepare the correct elevation beside existing features.

Special attention is given to:

  • Driveways and front walkways
  • Patios and pool decks
  • Garden and retaining-wall edges
  • Steps and gates
  • Drainage points
  • The foundation of the home

The sod must finish at a practical height beside these features. If the soil is built too high or left too low, it can create an awkward edge and affect the final appearance.

Install Fresh Sod with Close Seams

We source fresh Kentucky bluegrass from Greenhorizons Sod Farms. Each roll is fitted against the next and arranged with offset joints so the lawn does not develop long, continuous seams. Detailed cuts are completed around beds, trees and hardscape features. We minimize small scraps wherever possible because narrow pieces tend to dry more quickly.

Establish Root-to-Soil Contact

The completed lawn is pressed with a 300-pound roller. This step helps eliminate air pockets and brings the root layer into contact with the prepared soil. We also include a complimentary Root Rise starter blend with the installation to support the lawn during its early growth.

What to Know Before the Install?

Before we install the sod we will provide you a free sod consultation with the cost of how much sod we will need and how long the install will take. Most sod installation jobs can be done in one day though depending on the size of the property it can roll into multiple days.

Before we can install the sod we reach out to Call Before You Dig to ensure that we don't hit any utilities.

Once we know that we are clear we will book a date for the sod install.

Need Help Watering Your New Sod?

At Monarch Landscaping, we don’t just install sod — we also offer professional sod watering services in Ancaster to help your new lawn establish properly.

Let us handle the watering while your sod takes root.

Sod Watering Services

Get that New Lawn Wet

You will want to water the new sod as soon as it has been installed, for the next 14 days you will want to water your area for at least 45 minutes, we recommended picking up a sprinkler so you're not spending 1 hour of your day standing there. Alternatively, manually water your lawn 2-3 times a day spending 10-15 minutes at a time. PRO TIP, make sure you really water the edges your sod is beside such as a sidewalk/ driveway.

After 14 days, space out our lawn watering for 1 hour per watering every 2-3 days.

Let it grow then let it Mow

After the first 14 days of watering make sure your lawns have rooted to the ground, you can check by 2-3 soft tugs near the roots to ensure that your lawn has fully rooted to the lawn.

On your first and second lawn mowing cut make sure that your lawn mower is on the highest setting. On the next 2-3 cuts you can gradually lower the mower setting.

It Helps

At Monarch Landscaping we apply a thin layer of fertilizer with every installation,  after the install we recommend waiting 6-8 weeks.

Pro Tip: Fertilizer should be watered in or applied just before it rains to ensure you don't burn your lawn.

SODDING Ancaster FAQs

Got a question about sod? We are here to help.

  • Can sod grow beneath mature trees?

It depends on the amount of sunlight, moisture and root competition. Sod can establish in partial shade, but areas with dense shade may continue to struggle. We assess these conditions and discuss realistic alternatives where grass is unlikely to perform well.

  • Will you damage my gardens while removing the lawn?

We take care around existing beds, trees and landscape features. Access and working space are reviewed before the project begins. If certain plants or features create limitations, we will discuss them during the consultation.

  • Can you match new sod to the grass I am keeping?

Fresh sod may initially differ in colour or texture from an established lawn. The appearance can become more consistent as the new grass grows and both sections receive the same maintenance. For the most uniform result, replacing the entire connected area may be preferable.

  • Should the lawn be replaced before or after new landscaping?

Complete patios, walkways, fences and other disruptive projects first. Sod should usually be installed near the end of the landscaping process so contractors and equipment do not damage it.

  • Can you correct an uneven lawn?

Minor bumps, dips and surface irregularities can often be improved during lawn removal and grading. Significant slopes or drainage problems may require additional landscape work beyond standard sod preparation.
